What is l-carnitine? (0:40)

L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that's often taken as a supplement. Most of the focus about l-carnitine is regarding its benefits for weight loss, but it also may have an impact on brain function.

However, popular claims about supplements don’t always match up with the science. So before making any serious claims about whether or not it's an effective supplement, we looked at the research.

How l-carnitine seems to help with weight loss (0:50)

This is where the science and research do show the direct effects of l-carnitine on your body's ability to burn fat. See, inside our cells, we have mitochondria (often referred to as the powerhouse of our cells). One of the main functions of mitochondria is to shuttle fatty acids through the cell wall so they can be converted to ATP and burned off as energy.

L-carnitine plays a big role in helping move the fatty acids across the membrane wall efficiently. So the logic stands that it would have some fat burning benefits, right?

I’ve looked into L-Carnitine before, but this is one of the most thorough explanations of it’s benefits and draw backs that I’ve seen thus far. Nice work!

      Thanks for the tips around side effects Doc. Have been taking 500mg daily for around 3 months now. It has helped with my blood sugar control, i.e. increased insulin sensitivity, but haven’t noticed any significant contribution to weight loss with my diet and exercise regime. Am hoping just 500mg per day won’t trigger the TMAO side effect. Thank you.

        you should aim at 2000mg daily. i personally do that with great results

        Ur results are coming from something else 500mg isn’t anything cause 2 or 4 grams is average and I’m taking 8 grams through out the day and can feel it

      I’ve been using it along with a very balanced diet and it’s definitely helped me lose weight but good video.

      I was on it for a month, I must say that I personally noticed some fat burn compared to the previous month ( combined with good diet and exercise) , nothing crazy but its better than nothing, my suggestion would be to take it on and off, maybe 1 or 2 bottles a year. perhaps in the spring to burn off that winter fat.

      arnitine works really well for me as a pre workout along with high glycemic carb during a cutting phase. Taking L Carnitine alone does not work. You need carbohydrates to create insulin responses so that carnitine can be loaded into the muscle cells.
